D1086 New York Sunset World Trade Center

Rising 107 stories above the East River, the twin towers of the World Trade Center were the tallest buildings in New York City. Designed by modernist architect Minoru Yamasaki, the north tower was completed in 1970 and the south tower in 1971. Located in the financial district of lower Manhattan, the buildings contained over 13 million square feet of office space, the Windows on the World restaurant and the Top of the World observation deck.

On September 11th, 2001, two airplanes were hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists who used the jetliners to destroy the skyscrapers. The former site of the buildings is now known as Ground Zero.
